Passports and Visas:
All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months
beyond the intended length of stay.
Holders of British, most EU, Australian, and New Zealand passports
presently do not require a visa. Tourist visas are required for US and
Canadian citizens, and you should check with the local embassy for more
information. Please Note:
Visa regulations can and do change without notice and if you are not a
British passport holder please check the current regulations in good time
to obtain a visa if one is required.
Local Payments:
There is no local payment on this holiday.
Currency Information: We recommend that you take most of your spending money in US
Dollars cash or travellers cheques. Sterling and Euros can be exchanged
quite easily in Rio, but rates tend to be less favourable.
The unit of currency in Brazil is the Real (BRL), divided into 100
centavos. In August 2007, the exchange rate was £1 = 4.14 BRL, and
US$1 = 2.09 BRL.
Extra Expenses and Spending Money:
We would suggest that you allow yourself around £25 per day spending
money, although you can get by on much less. It is easy to eat
inexpensively in Rio, and a very good meal can be found for under
US$10 (excluding alcohol). Taxis from the hotel to Copacabana or
Ipanema should cost no more than US$5-10 depending on traffic or the
time of day.
Tipping:
Tipping is very much part of the service culture in Brazil, and although it
is not compulsory, most staff in restaurants and cafes would expect a tip
in the region of 10-15%.
Security:
Rio has a bad reputation for petty street crime, but it is easy to avoid
being a target by taking a few simple precautions. When out and about,
don’t wear jewellery that is or looks expensive. Don’t carry around a big
bulging backpack or daypack. Small and discreet is the order of the day.
‘Bum bags’ are also a big no-no; carry your money in an undergarment
money pouch.
