Passports and Visas:
All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months beyond
the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct
personal documents and to obtain your own visa
British, most European, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and US citizens
need a tourist card for Mexico, and this is issued automatically when crossing
the border from Guatemala.
For Guatemala, British and most European passport holders do not need a
visa, neither do nationals of Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canadian.
For Belize, visas are not required by British and Commonwealth nationals,
citizens of EU countries and the USA.
Please Note: Visa regulations can and do change without notice and if you are not a British
passport holder please check the current regulations in good time to obtain a
visa if one is required.

Health Requirements:

Vaccinations and Health:
No vaccinations are obligatory
We recommend vaccination against:

  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis A

Much of this trip is through malarial areas
we strongly recommend taking malaria tablets and taking precautions to avoid
being bitten by mosquitoes during the trip.

  • The minimum age for this trip is 16 years old

Extra Expenses and Spending Money:
There are entry and exit taxes for Guatemala and Belize payable when
crossing land borders - these are variable but should not come to more than
US$15 in total. Please note that the entry and exit taxes are changing
constantly, your leader will advise of any changes where appropriate.
An airport departure tax of approximately US$30 per person is payable when
leaving Guatemala City airport. This is subject to change.
The government of Mexico has imposed a new tax on visitors to the country. It
is called a ‘tourism tax’ and is approximately US$20 per entry (200 Mexican
Pesos). Please retain the Tourist Card given on entry into Mexico, as this will
allow you to cross the border into Belize without complications.

Currency information:
We recommend that you take most of your spending money in US Dollars
cash, since sterling and euros are hard to change and the rates of exchange
are likely to be poor.
The unit of currency in Guatemala is the Quetzal (GTQ), divided into 100
Centavos.
The unit of currency in Mexico is the Peso (MXN), divided into 100 Centavos.
The unit of currency in Belize is the Belize Dollar (BZD), divided into
100 Cents.
Travellers cheques (in US dollars also) can be quite difficult to change,
especially outside the capital. Thomas Cook’s travellers cheques are difficult
to change. It is certainly much more convenient to carry as much of your
money in cash dollars as possible, so long as you are security conscious. We
recommend that you bring some small denomination notes ($1 and $5 notes)
since getting change is often a problem when paying for small items, and taxi
drivers are notorious for never having change.

ATM availability:
ATMs are increasingly available in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize and are
now present in most tourist areas, although are generally difficult to find
outside cities or large towns. The PLUS system is the most widely available
international ATM, with CIRRUS not too far behind. A flat fee of up to US$3
and a small commission usually applies with debit card withdrawals.

Credit Card Acceptance:
Mastercard and Visa are the most widely available cards, although
please note that there is a government tax of 6% on all such
transactions.

Tipping
The leader will normally recommend that they collect a tip kitty of US$35-40
(per person) to cover the tipping of all local staff throughout the trip. Of course
this is optional but previous groups have found this system works well.
